What areas do you specialize in, and what therapy modalities do you use ?
I work with clients with ADHD in helping them finding strategies to minimize the impact of their symptoms, as well as the improving emotional and psychological aspects of living with the condition. For example, we might work on improving confidence and emotional regulation, while reducing shame and feelings of inadequacy.
I also work with clients who are dealing with symptoms of trauma. Although trauma can be a single traumatic life event, I also work with individuals who have experienced trauma during childhood, and grew up in environments where their needs were not met.
The main modalities I work with are behavioural interventions, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brainspotting, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming (EMDR).
What can I expect on my first session?
During your first session, we will go through informed consent first. Then, the session is about establishing a good working relationship, getting more information on your history, as well as your presenting symptoms. We usually talk about some working theories of what could be happening for you, which might help explain the symptoms you are experiencing. Finally, we come up with some goals together, as to what you would like to achieve through therapy, and I can explain some of tools I have available to help you achieve that.
How many sessions will I need, and how often?
The amount of sessions needed will depend greatly on the issues we are working with, the complexity of your case, and your goals. This is a conversation that we can have during our first session, or even during our free consultation.
One thing that is important to keep in mind is that making changes in therapy can be a slow process at times. However, clients who practice their strategies in their day to day life, tend to have faster outcomes than those who do not.
In terms of how often to book sessions, I often recommend that clients book sessions more regularly at the beginning of their work - about every week to two weeks. After the first 3-4 sessions, we tend to space them out more. This is to ensure you are getting enough momentum in your work, and learning enough strategies. Once the strategies are in place, it is important to have enough time between sessions to give you a chance to practice them “in the wild”.
